Runway: 2025-26 Board Member Callout
Apply now!
Runway Journal is excited to be accepting applications for our 2025-26 board members.
Runway Journal is an open-access digital platform that is committed to championing bold, critical, and experimental works. We commission and publish written, artistic, and multidisciplinary works that respond to thematic callouts and engage with current threads of Australian and international contemporary art.
Bolstered by a digital archive of contemporary practice spanning two decades, our platform continues to publish themed issues, as well as reviews, commentary, and other creative works on our Conversations platform. Through knowledge-sharing and collaboration, Runway Journal carves out a constantly-evolving independent space for its contributors, audiences, and team.
Now in its 22nd year, we are seeking enthusiastic individuals in a volunteer-capacity to shape our growing organisation and support new creative voices through various Runway Journal programs and professional development opportunities.

FAQs
What do Board members do?
Each Board member contributes to the creative direction of Runway Journal in collaboration with our multi-vocal Board of artists, designers, writers, curators, and arts workers. In these roles, Board members work collaboratively to select guest editors and contributors, review submissions, develop and edit creative pieces, and support Runway contributors to realise new work.
Additionally, the Board facilitates partnerships with adjacent organisations and collectives in the Australian arts sector to produce critical and engaging programming in line with Runway’s goals of cultivating critical, bold, and experimental practice. This is also a dynamic opportunity to up-skill and develop sector-impact leadership experience within the arts and culture sector.
Who is on the Runway Board?
Runway is powered by a voluntary-run board of artists and arts workers based across Australia. Operating collaboratively, we undertake dedicated roles across development, digital production, design, strategy, editorial, communications, and engagement.
The 2024 members are Laura Pike (Co-Chair), Georgia Hayward (Co-Chair & Editor), Akil Ahamat (Treasurer & Editor), Lou Garcia-Dolnik (Secretary), Bea Rubio-Gabriel (Editor), Anne-Marie Te Whiu (Editor), Yuanyu Li (Digital Producer), Jayden Fisher (Digital Producer), Claude Moelan (Digital Producer), Mike Spiteri (Digital Producer), Athanasios Lazarou (Digital Producer), and Sam Soh (Digital Producer).
You can learn more about our current and past Board members by clicking here.
Can people based outside Australia apply?
We are not accepting applicants based outside of Australia. This is to accommodate and align Board meeting times and operational logistics with various contributors, artists, and partnerships.
Can you tell me more about the Optional Management roles?
For 2025-26, we are offering the Management roles for Deputy Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary positions. These are not separate roles and are usually appointed to compliment a Board member’s primary roles. These are Office Bearer roles that serve to complement a Board member’s regular responsibilities so that they can better inform that person’s understanding of Runway Journal’s strategic management and programming across all Board operations. For 2025-26, the appointed Deputy Chair will shadow the incoming Co-Chairs, while the Secretary and Treasurer would take over from the outgoing Secretary and Treasurer.
At Runway Journal, we’re dedicated to cross-Board collaboration and knowledge-transfer, so at the start of a Board tenure, incoming members will receive a Welcome Pack, Strategic Plan and other core documents, plus receive handover sessions to guide them into their new roles (and if appointed, their Office Bearer roles).
Are there any paid positions available?
Currently, we do not have any paid positions available. All Board members work in a volunteer-capacity over their two-year tenure.
As of August 2024, Yuna Lee joined the organisation as the new Digital Coordinator. This marks the first paid arts worker role in the organisation’s 22-year history and an important step towards the long-term sustainability of Runway’s platform.
Yuna will support the delivery of Issue 48: Groundswell, guest-edited by Maya Hodge, and support the Board by managing day-day operations including administration, communications, finance, website, marketing, and programming.
